Top 10 Tips for
Successful Web Design
by Kate Schultz
1. Make your Web
site easy to read. Choose your text and background
colors carefully. Use dark text on light background.
2. Keep the look of
your Web site consistent. Use the same colors and
format throughout your site.
3. Keep your site
friendly with fast download times. Shrink your
graphics. Keep your pages to 40-60K.
4. Make your Web
site easy to navigate. Your visitors should be able to
find all of your hyperlinks clearly by using
easy-to-follow navigational paths.
5. Select your Web
graphics carefully. Clearly label your buttons.
Function is more important than flash.
6. Make your Web
site easy to find. Get your own domain name.
7. Offer a search
feature on your Web site. If your visitors are looking
for specific information, they will appreciate the
convenience offered by a search capability.
8. Put contact
information on each page of your web site. Make it
easy for your visitors to contact you from any Web
page.
9. Use "click
here" in the body of your text to tell your
visitors what to do. New users might not know where to
click.
10. Organize your
Web site to meet the needs of your visitors, not your
Web site designer. "Cool" is a means to the
end, not the end.
